Cumaro Wine

€34.50

First vintage: 1985

Montepulciano 100%

Marche, Conero

Cùmaro is one of the most important wines in the story of Umani Ronchi, and it can also be numbered among the founder members of the family of fine wines from the Conero area.

It was created in the mid eighties to celebrate the Montepulciano variety of vine, and an area close to the sea with highly calcareous soils, using methods based on very strict selection of grapes in the vineyard and what were, at least for then, modern techniques of vinification and ageing. The name Cùmaro is a tribute to Mount Conero, komaros in Greek, which means ‘arbutus’: an ever- green shrub which grows freely in its woodlands. Since 2004 the wine has been entitled to the appellation “DOCG (Guaranteed and Controlled Denomination of Origin) Conero Riserva”.

Description

Cùmaro Conero Riserva DOCG

Cùmaro is one of the true icons of the Conero area—a 100% Montepulciano born from historic vineyards overlooking the Adriatic Sea. A red wine of great character and elegance, it beautifully captures the essence of the Marche region through its velvety structure and deep, complex aromas.

Quick Facts

  • Denomination: Conero Riserva DOCG

  • Grape Variety: 100% Montepulciano

  • Production Area: Marche, Osimo (Ancona) — Vineyards at 150-200 meters above sea level, south-east exposure.

  • Soil Type: Very deep, chalky loam with ancient marine origins.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby red enhanced by elegant garnet reflections.

  • Nose: An intense, rich bouquet opening with ripe plum, blackcurrant, and morello cherry, leading into sophisticated spicy notes of black pepper, vanilla, and sweet tobacco.

  • Palate: Soft, enfolding, and remarkably smooth. The well-integrated tannins carry the wine into a pleasantly dry, persistent, and elegant finish.

Winemaking & Aging

Vineyard Philosophy: Yields are kept strictly low (6-8 tons per hectare) through precise pruning and targeted cluster thinning to ensure maximum fruit concentration and quality.

The grapes are exclusively hand-picked in mid-to-late October, ensuring peak phenolic ripeness. After temperature-controlled steel tank fermentation with natural yeasts (12-14 days) and the completion of malolactic fermentation, the true maturation begins.

The wine ages in 225-liter oak barriques for 12-14 months, followed by an additional 6-8 months of bottle aging in a temperature-controlled environment before release.

Serving & Pairing Guide

  • Perfect Pairings: An outstanding companion for rare-cooked red meats, game birds, and mature, structured cheeses.

  • Serving Temperature: 16-18 °C

  • Recommended Glass: A large, broad-bodied glass. This allows proper oxygenation for a long-aged red, softening the tannins and concentrating the complex tertiary aromas toward the opening.
